African human rights delegation satisfied with visit

Luanda - The delegation of the African commission of human and peoples’ rights (ACHPR) that visited the country on April 19-26, meant to assess the situation in Angola, on Monday here ended its mission, satisfied with the progress recorded in this domain, ANGOP has learnt.

This was said to ANGOP, at Luanda's 4 de Fevereiro International Airport, by the ACHPR's commissioner and special rapporteur to Angola, Soyata Maiga, who led the human rights commission team of the African Union.

According to that Malian official, during the talks and the visits to municipalities and prisons, she had the opportunity to see that the Angolan government has invested a lot and has achieved progress in the areas of human rights in comparison to other states of the continent.

She mentioned the Viana female prison, which she considered as an example with regard to respect for human beings and women’s dignity, as well as mentioned the approval of the new Constitution, the reform in the judicial system, as well as the creation of the State Department for of human rights.

Despite some progress, the official called on the police to improve their way of acting, mainly with regard to matters of expelling foreign citizens and treatment of refugees, taking into account the African Union Charter.

Soyata Maiga said that during the meeting she had with MPs she could verify that democracy in Angola is a fact and that the problems of good governance are being taking under consideration.

During her stay, the official met with the ministers of Foreign Affairs, Justice, Home Affairs, Family and Women Promotion, the Ombudsman and the Secretary of State for Human Rights.

Soyata Maiga was accompanied by the ACHPR's official secretary, Chafi Bakari, the rapporteur in charge of human rights in Africa, Belchir Khalfallh, and the ACHPR's technical assistant, Caron Kgomo.
