The European Union has called on Kyrgyzstan's interim government to respect human rights and the rule of law in the aftermath of the ouster of the country's president.
EU foreign ministers meeting in Luxembourg Monday say in a statement it is important for the central Asian nation to install a democratic government "that fully respects the rule of law and human rights."
Former President Kurmanbek Bakiyev was deposed in an April 7 uprising that left 85 people dead. He later fled to neighboring Kazakhstan and then to the Belarusian capital, Minsk.
Interim officials have set presidential elections in Kyrgyzstan for Oct. 10.
Kyrgyzstan's security service said Monday it has taken the former interior minister into custody on unspecified charges.
