MN teacher wins human rights award

WASHINGTON, D.C. — As we finish up one of the roughest winters in recent memory (and the snowiest ever in the nation's capital), I thought it might be a good idea to kick off March with a little bit of good news.

An Eagan teacher today became the first Minnesotan to win the National Education Association's George I. Sanchez Award, which goes to an educator "whose activities have made significant improvements in educational opportunities and advanced the achievement of equal opportunity for Hispanics."

Magaly Miralles came to the United States from Venezuela at age eight, unable to speak English. She now teaches English language learners at Red Pine Elementary in Eagan. She'll receive her award July 2 at an NEA awards banquet in New Orleans.

"Magaly Miralles knows what it’s like to speak a foreign language in a new country,” said NEA President Dennis Van Roekel in a statement announcing Miralles' win. “That understanding has led to her life’s passion, working to make sure Spanish-speaking new-comers to America are successful in school. Magaly works with students, with their parents, and with the Spanish-speaking community to make sure that every child has the opportunity for a great education. We all live in a better world because of her efforts."

Congrats Ms. Miralles, and thanks for all that you do.
