U.N. promotes abortion, not human rights

As a pro-life advocate, I cannot help but see the sad irony in the United Nations’ supposed advocacy for human rights. In his Tuesday letter, Ohio State University professor Chadwick Alger discussed the U.N.’s celebration of Human Rights Day.

He pointed to research that demonstrates “long-term peacebuilding is more effective and less expensive than responding to violence after it happens.” While that seems reasonable, the U.N.’s advocacy for abortion contradicts its commitment to peacebuilding. One of its reports has gone so far as to classify prohibitions on abortion as “torture.”

The U.N. proves itself woefully backward. Simply put, abortion is torture. Abortion dismembers, poisons, burns, starves and ultimately kills a human child — in his mother’s womb, of all places. We can put long-term peacebuilding into action only if we honor and protect the right to life from the moment of conception, agreeing to never aggress against the child and to raise the child to never aggress against others.

The U.N. can call itself a defender of human rights only when it rejects abortion.
