Transgender woman files human rights complaint against Saskatoon shop
Rohit Singh officially files complaint against Jenny's Bridal Boutique
Rohit Singh, a transgender woman has filed a human rights complaint against a Saskatoon bridal shop.
Singh went to the Saskatchewan Human Right's Commissions office Wednesday morning to officially file a complaint against Jenny's Bridal Boutique.
"I just filed a complaint against Jenny's Bridal," said Singh.
"I'm so happy because it is a very big thing for the transgender community."
In April, Singh accused the bridal boutique store of discrimination after staff refused to let Singh try on a wedding dress.
She said she wasn't definitely not happy when the initial incident took place. Singh, who is from India said she wanted to come to Canada because of the human rights for transgender and gay people.
"In India, you can be killed for being gay or transgender," she said.
"Canada has all the equal rights for humans. It doesn't matter what you are male, female, transgender, LGBT; you are first a human. You have the same rights as everyone."
She said it took a lot of courage for her to file the complaint but the support of the community helped her to take the step.
"It is clearly written on it that to discriminate transgender is against the law."
The next step for Singh is to fill out a few more forms before the commission will contact Jenny's Bridal Boutique's owner.
"They will call Jenny's officially and they will talk to her. Then they will call me," she said.
"Then there will be a gathering between me and Jenny and the officials."
Although she said a face-to-face meeting with Jenny might be difficult, Singh said that she needs to do it.
"With this step it will help remove transgenderphobia," she said.
