Gunmen assassinate human rights activist in Abia
A human rights activist, Chidi Nwosu, was on Wednesday assassinated by unknown gunmen in his hometown, Ameke, Abam, in Arochukwu local government area of Abia. Until his death, Mr. Nwosu was the chairman of Human Rights Justice and Peace Foundation, a non-governmental organisation that was in the fore front of the campaign for good governance. Confirming the incident, Amaka Nwosu, the wife of the deceased, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that her husband was returning from a wake about 4.30 a.m. when he was shot in his compound. “They followed him into our compound and shot him dead on the spot and we have reported the incident to the nearby police station,” she said. However, Geoffrey Ogbonna, the Police public relations officer in Abia State, said the incident had not been reported to him.
Meanwhile, the corpse has been deposited at the mortuary.
