Aung San Suu Kyi Addresses Followers
Burmese human rights icon and winner of the 1990 national election Aung San Suu Kyi has reportedly addressed a large group of her followers in the capital city of Rangoon.
Suu Kyi was released just yesterday after a seven year stint in house arrest and she reportedly told her followers :” The basis of democratic freedom is freedom of speech”. Her release was widely welcomed by the globally community. There are fears that it was just a diversion to avert attention from the widely condemned election the reclusive state held last week.
The poll was dominated by military aligned parties and written off as a sham in most of the world. Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy won the country’s elections in 1990 but was never allowed to assume power. She instead has spent most of the past twenty years since then in prison or house arrest. She called on the followers of her movement to work together for national unity in the country.
