Council Tables Vote on New Human Rights Commission Members
Fireworks in council chambers sparked by more debate over the city Human Rights Commission.
The Sioux City City Council was scheduled to appoint two people to the commission, but a decision remains to be seen. Nancy Furness was one of the two candidates. The other, Jamie Bowers, withdrew his name due to another offer.
After a heated debate, the council decided a decision will have to wait. The Human Rights Commission has been surrounded by controversy due to members feelings that diversity is being compromised.
That, along with recent headlines over concerns about the Director Karen Mackey and several complaints filed with Iowa Civil Rights Commission, made the council feel it would be best to reconvene and vote in two weeks.
