US: Honduras has much work to do on human rights
A U.S. State Department official says Honduras still has a lot of work to do to guarantee the respect for human rights, including investigating violations and prosecuting those responsible.
U.S. State Department Undersecretary for Democracy and Global Affairs Maria Otero says some progress has been made since President Porfirio Lobo took office in January. She says the U.S. government is willing to support Honduras' efforts in that area.
Otero made her comments Wednesday at the end of a two-day visit to the Central American country.
Honduras has one of the highest homicide rates in the Western Hemisphere and continues to recover from the political crisis that followed last year's ouster of former President Manuel Zelaya.
