Catastrophe in Kyrgyzstan
A German human rights worker in the southern Kyrgyzstan city of Osh described on Saturday an increasingly dire humanitarian situation amid the violence of the previous few days.
In a telephone interview with the German Press Agency dpa in Moscow, Andrea Berg said a "humanitarian catastrophe" of immense proportions was brewing in the city.
"It's a horrible situation. The sky this morning was black, and ashes were raining down from the sky," she said in describing conditions in the city of 500 000 people.
"There is nothing left to eat because the stores have been plundered. And since the violence started on Thursday the gas has been cut off as well," Berg, an observer with the Human rights Watch (HRW) group in Kyrgzystan, told dpa.
She said it could be that the death toll is higher than the at least 65 officially given so far.
"The well-organised Uzbek community has reported that they have collected 520 bodies," Berg said.
"Naturally one has to be careful regarding such figures. But the situation overall is very unclear."
The humanitarian situation was being worsened by the ethnic tensions, she reported. Thousands of Uzbeks were now fleeing to Uzbekistan after attacks "by drunken Kyrgyz youths".
"I can report very little at the moment regarding the background to the unrest. But due to the tense situation of the past two months in the entire country just a small spark is all that's needed for an escalation," Berg said in commenting on the Kyrgyz-Uzbek tensions.
"What is clear at the moment is only that people are panicking and are hoping for international help because they no longer trust the local authorities," she said.
"The homeless and refugees urgently need food and medications."
