Seminar on threats of liberalism by human rights groups at UN
KUALA LUMPUR: Human rights groups at the United Nations are a threat of liberalism, says a group of Muslim non-governmental organisations here.
A half-day seminar will attempt to get this message across at 8.30am Saturday (Oct19) at the Tun Abdul Razak Memorial here.
The Seminar Ancaman Liberalisme oleh Kumpulan-Kumpulan Hak Asasi di PBB (Seminar on the threats of Liberalism by Human Right Groups in the UN), organised by Ikatan Muslimin Malaysia (Isma) will feature an exhibition and speeches.
Organising committee member Jamaliah Wahab said in an email that special addresses would be delivered by Isma vice-president Aminuddin Yahaya and Ustaz Aizam Mas’ud from the Department of Islamic Development and not Senior Federal Counsel Naser Disa as stated on the seminar poster.
Representatives of several Malaysian NGOs are heading to Geneva for Malaysia’s Universal Periodic Review by UN members at the Human Rights Council on Oct 24.
Muslim Lawyers Association vice-president Azril Mohd Amin, who is leading a delegation of 17 representatives from the Coalition of Muslim NGOs in the UPR Process (MuslimUPRo) to observe the session, left last night with two others.
He said the others would leave over the next few days.
MuslimUPRo, which is going for the first time to Geneva, wants to ensure that the implementation of human rights in Malaysia must be “properly based on syariah laws and the Federal Constitution.”
Azril said they had no side activities planned apart from having informal meetings with delegates from other countries. He added that they were “not against all of the demands” of other Malaysian NGOs.
The smaller number of representatives from the Coalition of Malaysian NGOs in the UPR Process (Comango), will only start leaving on Saturday.
According to Honey Tan, of Empower (the co-secretariat for Comango), they would hold a briefing at the UN, the day after the UPR.
Comango members here are holding a live streaming of the three and a half hour-UPR process on the 24th at Coffee 5 Cups at Plaza Damas 3 from 8.30pm to midnight.
