CHRAJ Central Region records 951 human rights cases in 2012

The Central Regional office of the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) last year recorded a total of 951 human rights cases in the region.

Mr Richmond Mensah the Regional Director of the Commission who made this known to the GNA in an interview in Cape Coast on Friday, said out of the figure 837 of cases have been closed whiles 114 were pending.

He said 639 of the cases were successfully resolved through mediation whiles 139 were through other means instituted by the commission adding that there was lack of sufficient personal interest in 32 of the cases.

The Regional Director said 35 cases were redrawn whiles, 40 had loss of interest in pursuing the complainant, with discretional decision taken to cease investigation on 64 of the cases.

On the violation of children’s Right cases, Mr Mensah said 435 child- Non maintenance cases were recorded, access to child, 60, improper care, 18 , denial of paternity, 14, unlawful custody seven and two violation of right to education.

Cases on Women’s Rights indicated that 25 non- maintenance cases were received, violation to rights of property recorded 13 cases whiles spousal battery and force eviction from marital home recorded six cases each.

In regards to Property Rights, Mr Mensah said the Commission recorded 136 cases of denial of share of property, 44 Title dispute cases and 18 denial of access to self -property.

The rest are Economic and Social Right cases of which 74 were recorded on breach of agreement , 51 cases on the Non- payment of wages, 10 on Environmental hazards, six each on Noise pollution and Nuisance/ misconduct with Witchcraft, Accusation and molestation, recording one case each.

Civil and Political rights recorded 24 cases whiles Administrative Justice and Anti-corruption recorded a case each.
