New human rights group soon to be launched
Former President of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights Sir Clare Roberts is spearheading an effort to launch a human rights group in the next three weeks.
Sir Clare said he is heartened by the interest expressed and added that the aim is to make people more conscious of their rights while making human rights defenders of those who do not necessarily think in those terms.
He said the general focus will be on educating the public about their rights.
Sir Clare noted that greater emphasis is being placed on human rights all over the world. He added this is at the heart of uprisings taking place in the Middle East.
“Human rights, I think is coming to the fore internationally and in places where human rights do not exist, the people themselves are rebelling against the lack of quality and the lack of human rights … What is happening today gives the lie to the fact that people are willing to tolerate inhumane treatment,” Sir Clare said.
