Official Raps West for Misusing Human Rights Issues

TEHRAN (FNA)- Secretary-General of Iran's High Council of Human Rights Mohammad Javad Larijani blasted the West for making an instrumental use of human rights, saying that the westerners are using the issue as an excuse to interfere in the other countries' internal affairs.

"Unfortunately, the West has interfered in all the affairs of (other) countries at the excuse of human rights," Larijani stated, addressing a gathering on 'contemporary human rights' attended by several non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and other human rights activist here in Tehran on Monday.

"Today, westerners are abusing the human rights in a bid to gain hegemony over the other countries," he warned, adding, "We should do our best to prevent their success."

He further stated that the western powers support terrorism under the pretext of human rights, stating, "Unfortunately, terrorism is defended under the title of (defending) human rights."

The remarks by Larijani came after Simon Gass, the British Ambassador to Iran, in a memo published in the official website of the British embassy in Tehran on December 9, criticized human rights situations in Iran, and said, "The British Government will continue to draw attentions to cases where people are deprived of their fundamental freedoms."

"Nowhere are they under greater threat than in Iran. Since last year human rights defenders have been harassed and imprisoned."

Meantime, Iranian officials and parliament members cautioned about the deteriorating conditions of human rights in Britain, and blasted the London government for its wild treatment of the country's students opposed to their tripled university tuition fees.

"Today, Britain and its allies are full-length mirrors for the violation of human rights in the world," member of the Parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Parviz Sorouri told FNA on Monday.

The British police treatment of tuition fee protesters has turned into a major scandal for Scotland Yard as video footages emerged showing mounted officers charging into the crowd.
