NCC Human Rights Day Program on AIDS and human rights

The Norwalk Community College chapter of the Student World Assembly will present NCC’s fourth annual Human Rights Day program on “HIV/AIDS and Human Rights” from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 1, in the PepsiCo Theater in the East Campus building.

Following a welcome by NCC President David L. Levinson, Ph.D. at 10 a.m., keynote speaker Yaniras Arias, director of community organization for the Latino AIDS Commission in New York /City, will discuss the organization’s AIDS awareness and prevention initiatives, and the history of the AIDS crisis. The Latino Commission on AIDS is a nonprofit organization dedicated to fighting the spread of HIV/AIDS in the Latino Community.

The second speaker will be Kim Canady, a Brooklyn native and health educator who learned she was HIV positive at age 10, after both her parents died from AIDS-related illnesses. Canady is a vocal advocate for people living with HIV/AIDS. She has traveled to Africa with UNICEF to talk about her experience with AIDS.

Following the speaker presentations, an AIDS Expo will be held in the East Campus lobby from 11:40 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Representatives from NCC student clubs will provide information on topics including:

· Millennium Development Goal #6 (Combating HIV/AIDS, malaria and other illnesses) · Children with AIDS · The AIDS awareness and prevention initiatives of St. Luke’s LifeWorks in Stamford · Local and global issues/resources for women with AIDS · AIDs and the Asian population · Health and wellness for people with AIDS/HIV · The Mid-Fairfield AIDS Project

NCC student groups scheduled to participate include the Student World Assembly, the HASTA Club, Phi Theta Kappa, Women’s Club, Gay and Straight Alliance Club, Asian Club and Wellness Club.

The NCC Student World Assembly holds a program on Human Rights issues every fall semester. Topics from past years have included human trafficking, the crisis in Darfur and immigration.

The Student World Assembly is a non-governmental, nonpartisan organization created to represent and empower students globally. It provides resources, forums and other tools through which NCC students can educate themselves and others about the issues affecting humanity and translate their ideas into meaningful action.
