UN welcomes release of children from detention
The Australian Government has announced a plan to release hundreds of asylum seekers from high security detention into the community.
Those eligible for community detention will include family groups, children and unacompanied minors. Refugee and human rights advocates have welcomed the news although many say it's still a problem that mandatory detention for asylum seekers arriving by boat remains Canberra's policy. The UN's refugee agency, the UNHCR, shares those views.
