Christian/Human Rights Activists to Hold Candlelight Prayer Vigil for Iranian Woman Sentenced to be Executed, by Stoning, in Iran

Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani is scheduled to be executed by stoning, as early as this weekend, for adultery. Ms. Ashtiani has recanted her confession saying she gave it under severe physical and emotional stress.

The Christian Defense Coalition and Hillside Missions will be leading the candlelight prayer vigil.

Both groups have a long history of working on social justice, human rights, civil liberties and faith issues both here in the United States and around the world.

The participants will be praying for justice and God's mercy regarding Ms. Ashtiani's case and also for all women around the world who are oppressed and treated as property.

They will also be asking for Christians all across America to join them in prayer and intercession.

One of the the organizers of the event, Rev. Patrick J. Mahoney, will begin a hunger strike/fast while standing in solidarity with Ms. Ashtiani beginning this Friday.

Rev. Patrick J. Mahoney, Director of the Christian Defense Coalition, based in Washington, D.C. comments,

"We are gathering in front of the Interests Section of Iran to prayerfully call upon God to intervene on behalf of Sakineh Ashtiani and spare her from a barbaric death for an action she says she did not commit.

"As people of faith, the Christian community embraces human rights and social justice for all who are oppressed and persecuted. This especially applies to women around the world who are much more vulnerable to injustice and oppression.

"After 5 years in prison and severe physical abuse, we pray that Iran will release Ms. Ashtiani and demonstrate to the world they believe in equal justice and human rights for all."

Kristopher Keating, Director of Hillside Missions, states,

"It is the role of the Christian Church to love. We love our neighbors in Iran. Our best expression of love today, is to pray and publicly call for Sakineh Ashitaini's life to be spared."
