The UN Council on Human Rights urges Kyrgyz government to investigate ethnic clashes
The UN Council on Human Rights urged the Kyrgyz government to conduct "full and transparent investigation" into the ethnic clashes in the south of the country. This is stated in the resolution adopted on Friday in Geneva. Initially, the document expressed concern about human rights violations during the events of April, when President Kurmanbek Bakiyev was overthrown, but in recent days the text was amended. The resolution "strongly condemns the violations of human rights committed during the protests that accompanied the change of government, and the provocation and violence in Osh and Jalal-Abad." The Council called on Kyrgyz authorities to urgently "protect human rights and fundamental freedoms" of the population, to promote "inter-ethnic reconciliation." According to latest data of the Kyrgyz side, as a result of the riots 192 people died and about 2 thousand sought medical help. The UN speaks of about 400 thousand displaced persons as a result of the conflict between ethnic Kyrgyz and Uzbeks in Osh that erupted on June 11.
