UK judge defends Human Rights Act
A report in The Times states that the judge who heads Britain's top court has defended the Human Rights Act and recent rulings by courts that terrorist suspects cannot be sent home to their own countries.
Lord Phillips of Worth Matravers, President of the Supreme Court, said that 'respect for human rights is a key weapon in the ideological battle' in the 'so-called war against terrorism'. In a rare intervention in the political arena, Lord Phillips, a former Lord Chief Justice, also hit out at criticisms of judges for applying human rights laws - saying that they were only applying the will of Parliament. And he defended their rulings that terror suspects could not be returned to their own countries, saying that 'most people would be astonished at the amount of care, time and trouble' that had been devoted to that issue, notes the report
