Human rights director to speak on supremacist movement
On Thursday, Travis McAdam will give a presentation on the white supremacist books that served as the catalyst for the “Speaking Volumes,” art show at the Yellowstone Art Musuem.
McAdam, executive director of the Montana Human Rights Network, will discuss how the network obtained the white supremacist books and provide background on the hate group that used the books in Montana. He will also discuss The Creativity Movement’s current organizing efforts in the state, including in the Billings area.
The presentation titled, “It Started with 4,000 Copies of The White Man’s Bible” will be at 5:30 p.m. at the Yellowstone Art Museum, 401 N. 27th St. in Billings. The event is sponsored by Not In Our Town Billings.
In 2003, the Montana Human Rights Network acquired more than 4,000 white supremacist books from a defecting member of The Creativity Movement, a national white supremacist group that had a state chapter located in Superior throughout the 1990s. The Network partnered with the Holter Museum of Art in Helena to create Speaking Volumes. The exhibit has been traveling around Montana for the past two years.
“The books used in Speaking Volumes are also the ideological driving force behind the white supremacists that have been active in Billings for the last two years,” said Cindy Konecny of Not In Our Town Billings. “The opportunity to learn about this exhibit, and the history of the books used in it, is a unique way for our community to better understand the challenges we currently face.”
