NHRC event to focus on women’s rights
Women’s rights and gender equality in the Arab world and Europe would be brought into the spotlight when the National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) hosts the fifth Arab-European Human Rights Dialogue on Monday.
The meeting which will continue until March 10, will explore ways at ensuring gender equality across the Arab world and Europe, with regard to current legislation.
About 14 national human rights institutions are among the participants at the three-day event, seven each from Europe and the Arab world, along with a number of relevant EU and UN agencies. “The participants will discuss about the role national human rights institutions in the two regions can play in promoting and protecting women’s rights,” a spokesman at the NHRC said in a statement.“It is crucial that this discussion is based on international and regional instruments for promotion of gender equality and women’s rights and their implementation,” the statement added.
The event coincides with the centennial anniversary of International Women’s Day, the 30th anniversary of the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), the 15th anniversary of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) and the 15th anniversary of the Beijing Platform for Action. The NHRC is a member organisation of the Arab-European Human Rights Dialogue Network comprising 20 member organisations and observer member organisations.
Throughout the upcoming event, the organisers will aim to raise awareness about women’s issues and also to address the gender gap. The Arab European Human Rights Dialogue (AEHRD) was established in 2005 by the Danish Institute for Human Rights (DIHR) in cooperation with the National Centre for Human Rights in Jordan.
It is a process designed to cultivate dynamic dialogue and interaction among national human rights institutions, for the development of common understanding as well as in the implementation of human rights.
