Russia - MFA - UN Human Rights Council Special Session on Haiti
A special session of the UN Human Rights Council, on support to the recovery process in Haiti after the January 12, 2010 earthquake, took place in Geneva on January 27-28. Russia was among the first to support this initiative of Brazil and Haiti.
The aim of the forum was to define ways of international assistance to Haiti in restoring the system of ensuring the basic rights of the population struck by a destructive calamity. It is primarily about ensuring in crisis conditions the right to food, housing, health care, access to water and so on. Special attention must be paid to the most vulnerable people – children, women and disabled persons.
Our delegation at the session briefed on Russian aid to Haiti, including the work of the rescue contingent that helped to preserve many lives.
The outcome resolution, cosponsored together with Russia by 99 states, in particular, reaffirmed the central place of the Haiti government in national reconstruction, with the UN playing a coordination role for international assistance, and stressed the need to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Haiti while providing humanitarian aid to it.
