Dubai airport to have human rights office

Dubai is set to become one of the few countries that have a human rights office at its international airport to handle relevant issues including persons mistakenly banned from travelling, the press reported on Wednesday.

The emirate’s police commander Lt General Dahi Khalfan Tamim approved plans to set up that office to deal with human rights issues for all passengers and persons using the airport, one of the largest airports in the world.

“The offices have already been assigned and they will start functioning next year,” Emirat Alyoum daily said, quoting Colonel Mohammed Al Murr, director of the general administration for human rights in Dubai.

“The office will handle human rights issues such as cases involving persons banned from travelling in order to find a quick solution to them…we have received complaints that some persons have been stopped from traveling for reasons which later were found wrong…such reasons could include financial claims which they have already settled.”

Murr said the office would handle all issues related to human rights including grievances, child and women protection and human trade.

The office’s task will not be confined only to passengers but all other persons at the airport, including the police, he added.

“This office will work round the clock and will also be run by female staff members to deal with cases involving women…the office is very important in handling relevant issues, mainly human trade and we have already completed the training of staff on how to detect human trade cases,” he said.
