RI follows ASEAN human rights draft
INDONESIA: Indonesian ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR) representative Rafendi Djamin has said Indonesia will ensure international consensus regarding human rights in implementing the drafting of the ASEAN Human Rights Declaration.
“There tends to [be willingness to] undermine and negate the standardized principle of international human rights,” Rafendi said in Yogyakarta on Saturday. He was interviewed during a civilian consultation forum for ASEAN human rights advocacy and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) at the Sunan Kalijaga Islamic Institute campus.
Drafting began this month and is expected to be complete before the ASEAN Summit on Nov. 2, Rafendi said.
With Indonesia being known as a stopover for refugees seeking asylum in Australia, Rafendi sees the need to ensure they, as well as those who become stateless, are provided their basic human rights.
