Stripping away our human rights

Most Canadians are living through a daily onslaught of news that is heartbreaking and depressing to the core. I am talking about the news within our own borders, never mind the world.

We have a Conservative government that is ignoring parliamentary procedures and pushing bills through Parliament. This is to manifest their vision of an iron will to sacrifice all in order to achieve a total meltdown of the environment and human rights in order that they can conduct business. All of this with no research and development for the future of the environment and what it means to our existence.

Last week a Conservative MP said he wants Parliament to extend human rights to the unborn. Never mind that many of us who vote feel that our human rights have been stripped away. Native Canadians have no rights; the UN has confirmed that and the Conservatives slam the UN. Women in the RCMP have no rights and are ignored by Ottawa.

Jack Layton is no longer with us to help fill a huge void of a much-needed voice.

Meanwhile, the Liberals are now the old Conservatives, especially here in Ontario. They are busy here in the countryside draining fields left, right and centre to install mammoth turbines to generate dollars for foreign investors. This is being carried out without any R&D and again at the cost of the environment.

A huge region in Temagami, which was on its way to being designated as a park, may be mined for the riches below earth. Never mind that the riches that are growing there are contributing to the very health of the province. Again, no R&D. Our standards seem to be based on information that is either lacking or outdated.

Canada, which was once an example of a democratic nation, has fallen behind to become a national embarrassment that sacrifices all without any intent to listen to science based on fact and is totally ignoring the basic human rights of its own citizens.

Good luck to my grandchildren; they are going to need it.

Amy Quinn, Grafton
