U.S. scholars: Taiwan marked as model country against human trafficking
Researchers commissioned by the U.S. Department of State yesterday visited National Immigration Agency, noting that Taiwan is listed as one of the top three countries with the best efficiency countering human trafficking with Columbia and Italy.
The two researchers are Meredith Dank and Colleen Owens from the Urban Institute who also visited Judicial Yuan, Ministry of Interior, Ministry of Justice and Council of Labor Affairs in a bid to get a better understanding of the partnership relations networking victims, government and NGOs against human trafficking.
NIA Director-General Hsieh Li-kung noted that as a crime against universal human rights, human trafficking is forbidden by the Anti-Trafficking Prevention and Control Act, which stipulates details concerning weighted penalties and protection and compensation for victims.
The visit of the U.S. scholars signifies a remarkable recognition for Taiwan’s efforts in containing the universal crime, added Hsieh.
It’s a common responsibility for the government, enterprises and employers to stem human trafficking and Taiwan will keep its efforts to build it as a champion of human rights, said Hsieh.
