UN's High Commissioner for Human Rights to visit Russia
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights arrives in Moscow later in the day to discuss human rights and the advancement of a civil society in Russia.
Navi Pillay will be in Moscow and St. Petersburg. On Tuesday she will be meeting with President Dmitry Medvedev, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and the heads of the Supreme and Constitutional Courts. Pillay is also scheduled to meet a number of her Russian colleagues and public activists.
Russia considers the visit as a “major step on the way of cementing this country’s cooperation with international human rights institutions which, in turn, would add considerably to the promotion of the human rights culture in the Russian society”.
